Addiction Medicine for Pregnant Women

Sahara Behavioral Health specializes in treating pregnant women with addiction disorders. We have the strong belief that supporting a woman early in her experience as a mother will lead to improved lives for her and her child. Our Addiction Medicine Medical Director, Dr. McKinney is both an addictionologist and a pediatrician giving her unique expertise in treating mother and child.

If a woman is pregnant or planning to become pregnant, the first thing she should do is talk to a healthcare provider. Some women need to take an opioid medication during pregnancy to manage pain or to treat opioid disorder. Our addiction medicine team will develop a treatment plan to address the opioid disorder, as well as other co-occurring health conditions.  Doing this as early as possible increases the chances of a healthy pregnancy.

Quickly stopping opioids during pregnancy is not recommended, as it can have serious consequences, including preterm labor, fetal distress, or miscarriage. Current clinical recommendations for pregnant women with opioid disorders include treatment with medication for opioid use disorder rather than supervised withdrawal, due to a higher likelihood of better outcomes for her and her baby and a reduced risk of relapse.

Buprenorphine is a first-line therapy option for pregnant women with opioid disorders. SAMHSA recommends treatment with buprenorphine for pregnant women with opioid disorders, in conjunction with therapy and medical services.

Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is an expected condition that can follow exposure to opioid disorder medications. A concern for NAS alone should not deter healthcare providers from prescribing or stop patients from managing their illness. Our provider can work with you in close collaboration with your pediatric care team to help ensure that your infant is monitored and treated with a little discomfort as possible.

We are here for you and your family. Let us help you move past the barriers of your pregnancy so that you can truly experience the joy of this moment. Your pregnancy should be a happy healthy experience for you and your baby.
